The sauce, the sauce, the sauce. Savory, creamy, cheesy sauce. I want to eat it, use it as a moisturizer, a sleep aid, an aphrodisiac, a peace offering or an additive to a warm bath. I would pour it in my coffee, drizzle it on a mound of scrambled eggs or dip chips in it while binge-watching a series on television only to wake up in the middle of the night with crumbs and cheese sauce in my beard. I would quite literally ruin my life for this stuff, and Pazzo Southside would be happy to oblige. “This stuff is basically like crack,” jokes proprietor Vicky Calore (happy belated birthday, Boss Lady).
She is referring to the pasta dish listed only as Farfalle. The sparse description beneath the listing—prosciutto, peas, parmesan cream—belies the big problems this pasta can cause if consumed without supervision. Diced prosciutto and peas populate the empty spaces between the bowtie pasta, and the whole dish is practically drowning in the parmesan cream sauce, itself so decadent and full of flavor it should come with a warning label. The pasta, cooked perfectly al dente, is the only thing that keeps you from guzzling the sauce down on its own, though if you can muster any self-restraint, the leftover liquid gold is well suited to fare la scarpetta all the way to rehab.

For years, it has been the policy of Goodwill Manasota to provide emergency assistance to community residents who are in need by providing clothing and essential household items through its Referral-to-Voucher Program. Whether it is a family that has survived a fire, a child coming from a low-income home or entering the foster care system who has insufficient clothing, a social service client entering transitional housing, a victim of domestic abuse who was forced to flee without any possessions, or a job-seeker without attire suitable for an impending job interview, Goodwill is there with the resources to help them get back on their feet and on the path to better days.
Approved agencies must make the referral for community members to benefit from the voucher program. Some of the area agencies on Goodwill's list include the American Red Cross, CareerSource, Children First, First Step of Sarasota, JFCS of the Suncoast, the Sarasota County and Manatee County Sheriff's Office, Safe Children Coalition, SPARCC, and Women's Resource Center. New on Goodwill's approved agency list is the All Star Children's Foundation, a local organization dedicated to healing the effects of trauma suffered by children who have been abused. Children who are coming into care will have access to clothing, with house parents in charge of the shopping.
“All Star is thrilled to collaborate with Goodwill to help provide for the children and families we serve,” said Stephen Fancher, chief development officer for All Star Children’s Foundation. “Community partnerships are a pillar of All Star’s programs and we are very happy to partner with Goodwill to provide much-needed clothes and other essential items for the children moving onto our Campus of Hope & Healing.”
The State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs has awarded the Hermitage Artist Retreat a $29,591 grant, which will be directed to help fund the Hermitage’s community arts and cultural programs. The award-winning creators across all artistic disciplines who stay at the Hermitage provide free public programs that attract thousands of residents and tourists every year. These programs take place at the Hermitage and throughout our region in collaboration with leading arts, cultural, and educational institutions. This year, some will also take place via digital and online platforms.
According to Andy Sandberg, Artistic Director and CEO of the Hermitage, these cultural gatherings provide both residents and visitors the rare opportunity to interact with celebrated authors, musicians, poets, playwrights, visual artists, composers, and performers from across the globe. “The artists creating work at the Hermitage are shaping the artistic and cultural landscape of the future,” says Sandberg. “The Hermitage has been the birthplace and incubator for significant works that have gone on to leading theaters, museums, and concert halls around the world.” The Hermitage’s audiences get front-row seats to experience brilliant new works-in-progress and participate in conversations with accomplished artists at the top of their respective fields.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) introduced the bipartisan Save Our Stages Act last week. Alongside Congress' RESTART Act, this vital piece of legislation provides Small Business Administration grants for independent venues where Sarasota Orchestra performs, including Holley Hall, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, and Sarasota Opera House. The legislation also protects promoters and festivals affected by COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. These grants offer financial support to keep performing arts venues afloat, pay employees, and preserve the arts ecosystem and a critical economic sector in communities across America.

As parents throughout Sarasota County are struggling with the decision about whether or not to send their kids back to school in person or virtually, Hershorin Schiff Community Day School has been selected for a Google program, "G-Suite with the Google Assistant" beta program, that will offer the flexibility to choose from in-person or distance learning from day to day. This adaptive learning program, which will be available to preschool juniors through eighth grade, will enable families to make decisions about how students will attend school as public health conditions evolve due to the coronavirus, rather than have to lock in a decision for a whole semester or even the entirety of the school year. Through the G-Suite/Google Assistant program, with a touch-screen Google Home Hub in each classroom, students at Community Day School can feel like they've got a seat in the front row of a classroom, even on a day when they're livestreaming classes from home. The school has been granted access to a data site where students can log in for real-time instruction. Additionally, with this program, classes can be recorded and catalogued, and accessed as desired at any time from a shared drive. Virtual school assemblies or special events can also be easily livestreamed for larger groups. The entirety of available resources is integrated into the school's new safe and secure Blackbaud learning management system.

Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner is urging Sarasota County voters to take advantage of early voting ahead of the Tuesday, August 18, 2020 primary election.“Why wait until election day to vote? Early voting provides an in-person voting experience – like on election day – but allows a person to vote early at any one of five sites conveniently located throughout the county,” Turner noted. To protect workers and the voting public at early voting and election day polling sites, the supervisor of elections is increasing safety measures, including providing face masks or face shields for poll workers and staff, routinely sanitizing surfaces and voting equipment, and practicing social distancing. Voters are also encouraged to bring and use face masks and practice social distancing when visiting early voting sites or on election day. Early voting begins Saturday, August 8 and continues through Sunday, August 16, from 8:30am to 4:30pm at the five locations listed below:

Due to COVID-19, the original gala, That’s Entertainment, to be held April 18, 2020 at The Municipal Auditorium, was canceled to keep patrons and staff safe from the virus. As the summer ends, so does the organization’s celebration of 90 years in downtown Sarasota. Sarasota County is working towards completing the update to the County's Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. This public outreach event will discuss the efforts to-date on the Master Plan, including an evaluation of the County's existing pedestrian and bicycle network and the prioritization process for completing the pedestrian and bicycle network throughout the County. In addition to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Update, this event will include an overview of the County's efforts to implement Complete Streets and the development of a Vision Zero initiative. Your participation and involvement in this event will help ensure that the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Update reflects the needs of the County's residents.
